ABOUT BETHANY MARCHMAN

Using traditional oils to create parallels between innocence and influence/ history and popular culture,Bethany Marchman's paintings are sometimes funny and sometimes sad. They are reflections of the awkward changes we experience as individuals and as a society, while questioning whether or not growth is synonymous with improvement.

Marchman's work has been exhibited in galleries across the country and internationally, as well as in notable art fairs and museums.

Kovacs Events in Washington DC Area Confirmed for This Fall at National Gallery of Art and AFI

‘Television’s Original Genius’ Life and Career Will Be Celebrated with Panel Discussion and Screening of his Work on October 27 at National Gallery of Art and Two Screenings of his TV Work at AFI in Silver Spring on November 3^rd and 4^th

Ediad Productions announced today that legendary comedian Ernie Kovacs (www.erniekovacs.com) is the subject of two diverse retrospectives coming to the Washington D.C.-area this Fall.  Both the National Gallery of Art (www.nga.com) and AFI Silver Theatre (www.AFI.com/Silver) will focus on Kovacs’ unique comedic talents as innovator, performer, creator and video artist gifted with a skewed sense of humor when television was in it’s infancy in the 1950s and ‘60s.

On Saturday, October 27, at 4pm, the National Gallery of Art (4th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, East Building) will present Ernie Kovacs: Video Art for the Intimate Vacuum, which will include both a screening of his absurdist video art as well as a panel discussion featuring noted critics Bruce Bennett & David Bianculli and Kovacs archivist Ben Model. Admission is free.

The following weekend, at 4:30pm on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4 at AFI Silver Theater (8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD) will screen highlights of Kovacs’ most beloved television shows and iconic characters for their Ernie Kovacs Program. Both programs will be curated by Ben Model who will feature footage from Kovacs’ groundbreaking television programs. Admission prices vary.

”Ernie Kovacs is an entire chapter in the high/low art debate,” said Margaret Parsons, head of film programs, National Gallery of Art. “He was gifted on so many levels and was already mixing media – music, video and performance art – by the mid ‘50s, creating his own ‘happenings’ long before the art movements of the 1960s”.

“It’s a tremendous honor to have both the National Gallery of Art and the American Film Institute celebrate the comedic genius of Ernie Kovacs,“ said Joshua Mills, President of Ediad Productions. “Kovacs fans will be able to experience both his most well known and some of his more offbeat shows and sketches at these two prestigious institutions.” 

Known as ‘Television’s Original Genius,’ Ernie Kovacs was a hugely influential figure for late night entertainers like Steve Allen, David Letterman, and Conan O'Brien, whose work has been cited appreciatively by Martin Scorsese, Harold Prince, Matt Groening (THE SIMPSONS, FUTURAMA), Robert Smigel (SATURDAY TV FUNHOUSE; Triumph, the Insult Comedy Dog), Joel Hodgson (Mystery Science Theater 3000), Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman), Andrea Martin (SCTV), Terry Gilliam (MONTY PYTHON), and author Jonathan Lethem, among others.

Ernie Kovacs was a pioneer in early television whose inventive use of the medium inspired countless performers, directors, and video artists.  In addition to creating such indelible characters as Percy Dovetonsils, Matzoh Hepplewhite, and Uncle Gruesome, Kovacs invented a distinctly modern form of comedy that playfully subverted the television medium. Edie Adams (www.edieadams.com) was his on-screen partner as well as his wife. After his death in 1962 Adams was instrumental in not only saving but also preserving Kovacs’ body of work during the 1960s when she bought all existing Kovacs materials - including the masters that the television networks were planning to destroy them due to cost and storage issues.

Since 2011, the Ernie Kovacs archive has released video and audio material from the collection, most of which has never been seen or heard in more than 50 years. This continues on October 9 when The Edie Adams Christmas Record featuring Ernie Kovacs will be released via Omnivore Recordings (www.omnivorerecordings.com). Then. on October 23, The Ernie Kovacs Collection Volume Two, a three-DVD package, will be released via Shout! Factory (www.shoutfactory.com). Kovacs and his work have also been feted at such prestigious institutions as The Paley Center for Media, Museum of the Moving Image in New York, the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles, the Long Beach Museum of Art in Long Beach, California and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, Spain.

Visitors will be asked to present all carried items for inspection upon entering. Checkrooms are free of charge and located at each entrance. Woman Overcomes Disability to Become Award Winning Artist

Karen Sue Wheeler is an award-winning American artist who was born with a form of Muscular Dystrophy known as Spinal Muscular Atrophy. She uses a small brush and very little pigment that creates a dry-brush effect that resembles colored pencil. Each painting that she produces takes from 80-500 hours to complete. She developed a unique sling-like device that she wears on her arm to assist her with wielding her tools, rather a brush, pencil or pen.  Joel Geist Video created a portrait of Karen.  The film has captured her views on her artwork, some of her techniques of working with watercolor, and it shows a phenomenal amount of her work and accomplishments.  The film is available for viewing HERE.

Karen hides or places a rose in every painting completed after 1986.  It represents her in her work, and it is one of the most loved and accepted flowers in societal and visual terms.  When she relates the rose to herself and her life, she also considers the strength and the thorns. Therefore, when people view Karen's work they not only feel her presence, they accept her and enjoy her work for the pleasure it brings.

Todd Kerns, bassist for Slash's band was the subject of one of Karen's paintings, "In Todd We Trust":

"Karen is one of those living examples that art and creativity flow through those who are chosen as their vessel. It is awe inspiring. I always marvel at every new piece she creates. Her unique creativity and humor always shines through as only a truly inspired artist can do."

From 1985 to 1991 Karen was the only disabled artist on the Board of Directors of VSA Arts California, a non-profit organization dedicated to integrating mentally and physically challenged adults and children into society via the arts.  She not only coordinated and participated in major statewide exhibits and programs but also held the position of Vice President.  She is still on the Honorary Board.  Karen was selected Disabled Professional Woman of the Year by the Pilot Club of Southeast Los Angeles in 1990.

Karen now resides in Henderson, Nevada and is currently the only surviving professional artist in Southern Nevada with a neuromuscular disease.  She has collectors who live all over the world, a list of which includes Julian Lennon, Phil Collins, Shadoe Stevens, Justin Hayward, Joan Rivers, Damon Wayans and Steven Segal. 

Karen is a lifetime member of the Vegas Artists Guild where she served on the Board of Directors for 11 years.  In addition, she served three years on the Nevada Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities and considers herself an advocate for those less fortunate.  She also co-created with William Schnell in 2012 a site to assist people with disabilities called Go Hit Yourself.  (www.GoHitYourself.com)

World-famous surrealist and New York City native VINCENT CASTIGLIA is pleased to announce his upcoming solo art exhibition entitled ‘Resurrection’, taking place from October 4^th-31^st at Sacred Gallery NYC (located at 424 Broadway 2nd Floor between Canal and Howard, NYC).  The gallery will host an opening reception on October 4^th from 8-11pm. This retrospective encompasses all of Vincent’s available work from the beginning of his career and aims to examine the congruency of life and death. Propelled by correlated personal experiences just this year, his deep and continually renewed understanding of the consistency between the two themes will come to prominence at this haunting and memorable exhibition.

‘Resurrection’ will include a striking collection of Vincent’s paintings, which are created exclusively in his own human blood. Vincent’s figures, their musculature and skin, are painted with what could be thought of as “liquid flesh”. Its tendency to quicken the subjects is likely inapproachable by any other medium---as it is actual tissue with which it is being rendered. In this way the subject’s realism is not merely an optical illusion due to its level of detail, but rather is an actual transference of flesh and blood to each work.

In the privacy of his studio, Vincent practices a kind of modern-day phlebotomy, siphoning the life force which contains his own psychic energy, while giving it an outlet and form. In doing so, he dissolves the barrier between artist and art in a most literal and immediate sense.

In a personal statement, Vincent states, “This exhibit is the culmination of a lifetime of searching and posing many questions through images, making declarations of truths uncovered and pouring a myriad of emotions, conflicts, and bliss' into these coagulations which delineate all aspects of the past decade of my life.”

VINCENT CASTIGLIA’s impressive work has seen many sides of the entertainment world, as well. MTV New Media's Horror-Slasher Film, Savage County, featured his art as its official movie poster, depicting the three murderers in the film. Prior to the film, Vincent painted album art for heavy metal band Triptykon's 2010 debut release, Eparistera Daimones. Triptykon is founded by former Hellhammer / Celtic Frost singer and guitarist Tom Gabriel Fischer.

His work has been featured on New York 1 News, Spike TV, as well as the television series, Miami Ink. His work has been explored by countless art and culture, and media publications, in the US and internationally, including the New York Post, New York Daily News, and the recently released, Lexikon Der Phantastischen Künstler “The international encyclopedia of fantastic, surrealistic, symbolist, & visionary artists”.

The NYC Food Film Festival returns to New York City for its 6^th consecutive year, offering a unique series of events where food and film lovers will taste what they see on the screen, as attendees are simultaneously served the food that is seen in the films. Produced in association with the James Beard Foundation and benefiting the Food Bank For New York City, the 2012 NYC Food Film Festival runs from October 17-21.

This year’s Festival will feature six different events showcasing 40 food films, 18 world premieres, and over 100 foods and drinks, plus an Awards Ceremony hosted by NBC’s Cat Greenleaf. Highlights include an authentic Lowcountry Oyster Roast featuring 20,000 South Carolina Oysters freshly harvested in Bulls Bay, the return of the notoriousFood Porn Party with pig tails from NYC’s own Brooklyn Star and hand-forged Top Pot Doughnuts from Seattle, and world renowned ramen expert Keizo Shimamoto who will journey from Japan to demo & serve his famous ramen. This retrospective encompasses all of Vincent’s available work from the beginning of his career and aims to examine the congruency of life and death. Propelled by correlated personal experiences just this year, his deep and continually renewed understanding of the consistency between the two themes will come to prominence at this haunting and memorable exhibition.

‘Resurrection’ will include a striking collection of Vincent’s paintings, which are created exclusively in his own human blood. Vincent’s figures, their musculature and skin, are painted with what could be thought of as “liquid flesh”. Its tendency to quicken the subjects is likely inapproachable by any other medium---as it is actual tissue with which it is being rendered. In this way the subject’s realism is not merely an optical illusion due to its level of detail, but rather is an actual transference of flesh and blood to each work.

In the privacy of his studio, Vincent practices a kind of modern-day phlebotomy, siphoning the life force which contains his own psychic energy, while giving it an outlet and form. In doing so, he dissolves the barrier between artist and art in a most literal and immediate sense.

In a personal statement, Vincent states, “This exhibit is the culmination of a lifetime of searching and posing many questions through images, making declarations of truths uncovered and pouring a myriad of emotions, conflicts, and bliss' into these coagulations which delineate all aspects of the past decade of my life.”

VINCENT CASTIGLIA’s impressive work has seen many sides of the entertainment world, as well. MTV New Media's Horror-Slasher Film, Savage County, featured his art as its official movie poster, depicting the three murderers in the film. Prior to the film, Vincent painted album art for heavy metal band Triptykon's 2010 debut release, Eparistera Daimones. Triptykon is founded by former Hellhammer / Celtic Frost singer and guitarist Tom Gabriel Fischer.

His work has been featured on New York 1 News, Spike TV, as well as the television series, Miami Ink. His work has been explored by countless art and culture, and media publications, in the US and internationally, including the New York Post, New York Daily News, and the recently released, Lexikon Der Phantastischen Künstler “The international encyclopedia of fantastic, surrealistic, symbolist, & visionary artists”.
