AT THE BARN STUDIO Only:
NEW! Watermedia  Acrylics and Watercolor Techniques!
6 weeks only $200. Starting Sept 18 Oct 23- Tuesdays 10 am to 1 pm
Many times I have been asked to include an acrylic workshop. Well at long last here it is! Build on your watercolor techniques or start fresh, in combination with unique acrylic techniques and rich impasto I will broaden your range of skill sets for painting.  We will use washes as in watercolors, but add the opaque techniques that are only available in acrylic media. I have extensive history with acrylics, so peek in on this first rare opportunity to master a few of the secrets that have worked so well for me in the last 40 years of painting fine art and murals for a living.

Materials: a few basic 11"X 14" small canvases to start, your standard basic acrylic painting kit Red, yellow, blue, white. We will build on these as class progresses if needed.  A few ranges of large to small white nylon bright white flat brushes, and a fan brush. I will be do examples from my extensive art supplies, and many of these supplies will be made available to the students. To review works I have done in the past in acrylic and watercolor see the new website at www.gordonmeggison.com

Betsy Cain: Selections — Friday, September 7th, 7 pm

Betsy Cain: Selections

Please join us for the opening reception Friday, September 7, at 7 pm
Florida Mining Gallery, 5300 Shad Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257

Abstraction and figuration combine with the energetic application of fluid oil paint to canvas, yupo paper, or board.  This installation reveals works from 2006 through 2011, including many from her recent ambitious and well received solo exhibition, In Situ, at the Telfair Museum Jepson Center which celebrated Cain’s three decades as an independent artist in Savannah, Georgia.

Cain’s earlier work explodes with an abstract expressionist vibrancy, combining delicious colors with bold, fluid strokes of paint.  More recent works show a confident restraint and an attention to the overall and more detailed fabrication of the finished piece including her innovative cut outs.  The cut outs recall earlier work though are edited and applied to clean wooden panels cut into deliberate shapes that float off the wall surface.

Come for the art and stay for a glass of beer or wine and a delicious snack from local favorites, On the Fly food truck!

Ferry Fest!

WHO/WHAT:
Ferry Fest — A Ferry Big Party
Ferry Fest is a way for residents and their families to enjoy a day-long, fun-filled celebration and at the same time raise awareness of the historic St. Johns River Ferry and its vital role to the community. Ferry Fest offers something for everyone including food trucks, musical entertainers, margaritas and beer/wine, a special kids’ area, and ghost-storyteller Larry King! In addition, attendees can sign petitions supporting the ferry.

WHEN:
Saturday, August 25, 2012
1 PM to 9 PM

WHERE:
Mayport Village, Florida

BACKGROUND:
The St. Johns River Ferry service is a vital part of Northeast Florida's local transportation system, connecting State Road A1A between Heckscher Drive and Mayport Village. Discontinuing this service will have profound impacts on the First Coast's economic, transportation, and environmental interests. Funding from JaxPort, the Jacksonville City Council and the cities of Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach will allow the newly created St. Johns River Ferry Commission to take over ferry operations from JaxPort on October 1, 2012. Your support of Ferry Fest will help Friends of the St. Johns River Ferry Association (sponsors of the Keep the Ferry initiative) in its efforts to seek funding for the ferry’s long-term success.

For more information on Ferry Fest vendors, events, and parking visit: www.keeptheferry.org or e-mail info@keeptheferry.org.
