MOCA Hosts LAB Gallery Exhibitions

-Summer-Long Event Features Works of Local Artists-

Jacksonville, Fla.— The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA), will host the LAB Gallery, a summer-long event to promote emerging contemporary artists within the Jacksonville community. The gallery gives local artists a chance to promote and sell their works in a high visibility downtown setting in the Museum.

The LAB Gallery cycle consists of five exhibitions. The first opening took place on June 11. Upcoming exhibitions run from July 2 to August 13. The exhibition openings will take place on Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the 1st floor of MOCA.

MOCA will then continue to display the artwork for a two-week period. The opening exhibit schedule is as follows:

* July 2 – Tiffany Manning and Moises Ramos
* July 16 – Caterina Lionti and Russ Wilson
* July 30 – Trinity Baker and Casey Matthews
* Aug 13 – Mary Atwood, Christopher Cahill, and Ashleigh Hunter

Mark it 8, Dude. Over 2,000 Achievers made the pilgrimage to Louisville's 8th Annual Lebowski Fest this past weekend with comedy by Rob Riggle (Daily Show, The Hangover) and music by Black Diamond Heavies. (Full recap below)

Lebowski Fest 2009 is takin' ‘er easy for sinners all over America, starting with the West Coast. The Speed of Sound Tour Bus starts in Seattle on Monday, July 20th, with a very special event. Jeff ‘The Dude' Dowd – the inspiration for the main character in the Coen Brothers' classic, and member of the real-life ‘Seattle Seven' (it was him and six other guys) – will be honored in a homecoming ceremony at the Lebowski Fest Seattle Movie Party at Fremont Outdoor Cinema, in conjunction with The Fremont Arts Council and Fremont Chamber of Commerce. He will receive the first ever “Fremont Keys to the Universe”: recognizing outstanding example in the creation of a compelling urban mythology and enduring character that epitomizes Fremont's larger than life spirit and upholds its motto: 'Delibertus Quirkus: Freedom to be Peculiar.'

Lord, you can imagine where it goes from there. The Speed of Sound Tour rolls on through Portland, the Bay Area, and San Diego, featuring musical performances by Har Mar Superstar. Har Mar is currently working on his dance quintet and will be re-enacting the Landlord's interpretive dance. Come September, Lebowski Fest picks up where it left off in Denver and cruises on through all the way to the East Coast, and finally comes to rest in Austin, TX in October.

You Are Here: A Maze is a performance festival in a sculptural maze taking place at Williamsburg's Death By Audio from September 10 - October 2, 2009.

This 12-hour event on Saturday July 25 from 4pm - 4am also at Death By Audio will help make You Are Here: A Maze possible. Spend $12 for 12 hours with bands like Ninjasonik, Aa, and Nine 11 Thesaurus; special solo performances by members of Dirty Projectors, Zs, Extra Life, and Excepter; DJ sets, projections, guerilla theater, B-girl dancers, and delicious beverages served up by the ladies of Delicious Beverages!

Emphasizing the sprawling and interconnected nature of New York's underground, a trip through the maze offers a peak inside NYC's diy art/music scene. A meditation on passage and desire, You Are Here engulfs the space and presents beckoning inhabitants, dead ends, and uplifting epitaphs. Medium and genre vary and overlapping and simultaneous performances are frequent, each performer establishing a different corner or dead end as his or hers. You Are Here was first presented in 2007 by Trouble (Sam Hillmer and Laura Paris) at Chashama's Visual Arts Space.

Trouble is devoted to creating extreme environments that have no exterior, public art both condoned and illegal, and other kinds of visual/sound art intended to be used for some purpose. Their work is about community, spirituality, politics, craft, and beauty. Outreach is a part of all of Trouble's projects, as is what they call “in-reach”: designing events that strengthen the ties within the DIY art community and the art world as a whole.

AEG Live Presents Broken Lizard Live, the comedy troop behind the hit movies Supertroopers, Beerfest, and Club Dread. The show will arrive at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on October 24. Tickets go on sale Thursday, July 16 at 10am.

The five members of Broken Lizard will present stand-up comedy and sketches including characters from their previous films, improv, and original films. The group will also include a Q & A session with the audience, where they will discuss their experiences creating and filming their movies, including the upcoming The Slammin’ Salmon, which revolves around a restaurant owner trying to raise money to pay off a mob debt.

Broken Lizard will arrive at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on Saturday, October 24th. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, July 16th at 10am and are $29.50 in advance and $32 at the doors. EVER WONDER WHAT IT'S LIKE TO GO FROM CITY TO CITY WITH THE WORLD'S LARGEST TOURING ALBINO BURMESE PYTHON?

Jim Rose didn't when he agreed to purchase the mammoth deadly snake, MAURICE LE GRAND, from Belgium. It arrived in the United States yesterday. When its special crate was opened, Jim's wife gasped in sheer horror: "I knew it was big, but until you see it you can't even come close to fathoming what a complete monster it is".

MAURICE LE GRAND was purchased for $63,000, the highest price ever paid for a snake. Nearly twenty-four hours after its new home in the U.S. was set up, the Roses have adjusted somewhat. Jim says "It's actually pretty cool. We spent three months studying this species and the particulars of the nature of these rare albinos. We have also hired a snake butler who cares for it 24/7. Within two weeks I should be able to get into the encampment with it and begin bonding with the python. This has been my dream since I was a little boy. I can't wait to take it from city to city, showing people all over the United States that snakes deserve respect and dignity. The Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus), is the largest subspecies of the Indian Python and one of the 6 largest snakes in the world, on average growing up to 5.5 metres (18 ft) and weighing up to 71 kilograms (160 lb). They are native to rainforest areas of Southeast Asia, are nocturnal, semi-aquatic, and while young are often found near water and in trees; they are excellent swimmers, staying submerged for as much as half an hour. The Burmese Python continues to grow throughout life, and their great length is due to the presence of a large number of vertebrae. When adult girth is reached, the snakes tend to be ground hunters. An unsuitable choice for inexperienced snake handlers, Burmese Pythons are carnivorous, and are known to have attacked animals as large as alligators.
